Jesus Christ

Jesus of Nazareth (c. 4 BC – AD 30/33), called Christ (from the Greek Christos, translating the Hebrew Messiah, 'the anointed one'), is the central figure of Christianity and one of the most historically influential persons in world history. Christian orthodoxy holds him to be the incarnate Son of God — fully divine and fully human — whose crucifixion under Roman rule and reported resurrection three days later constitute the founding events of the Christian faith. Islam regards him (as Isa ibn Maryam) as a great prophet and the Messiah, though not divine. Judaism regards him as neither Messiah nor divine, but as a historical Jewish teacher of his period.

Beyond confessional theology, Jesus recurs as a widely-encountered figure in mystical and visionary experience across many traditions and periods, appearing to Christian mystics from Julian of Norwich and Teresa of Ávila to modern Pentecostal experiencers. Contemporary psychedelic research has repeatedly documented Jesus encounters on psilocybin, ayahuasca, and 5-MeO-DMT — often to people who identify as non-religious or ex-Christian. Rick Strassman's DMT research participants reported encounters they explicitly described as 'Jesus figures,' and Griffiths et al.'s 2019 psilocybin study on God encounters recorded a substantial subset of them as specifically Christ-figure encounters.

The phenomenology is remarkably consistent: a presence of overwhelming love and calm authority, often accompanied by a visual signature of radiant light emanating from a robed human figure with an unmistakable quality of gentle regard. Experiencers commonly report feeling forgiven, seen, and instructed without words, and — regardless of their prior religious commitments — retain a durable positive shift in their relationship with the figure afterwards.
