Krishna

Krishna (Sanskrit: कृष्ण, Kṛṣṇa) is one of the most widely worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon and, in the Vaishnava tradition, either the eighth avatar of Vishnu or the supreme Godhead in his own right (Svayam Bhagavan) from whom all other divinities emanate. He is the central figure of the Bhagavad Gita — the philosophical dialogue at the heart of the Mahabharata — where, as Prince Arjuna's charioteer on the eve of battle, he delivers one of world literature's foundational teachings on duty, action, devotion, and the nature of the Self.

Krishna's mythological persona is unusually multi-faceted for a supreme deity. He is depicted at different life stages: the mischievous butter-thief child of Brindavan; the flute-playing cowherd-lover of Radha and the gopis, embodying divine love (bhakti) as the highest of the rasas or spiritual moods; the wise and cunning prince who counsels his cousins the Pandavas through the Kurukshetra war; and the cosmic teacher of the Gita who briefly reveals his vishvarupa — the universal form, terrifying and transcendent, containing all beings and eons — to Arjuna's stunned recognition.

The devotional (bhakti) traditions organised around Krishna — most influentially the ISKCON movement founded by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami in 1966 but rooted in centuries of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Nimbarka's tradition, and the poetry of Mirabai — describe direct experiential encounters with Krishna as the culmination of devotional practice. In psychedelic reports, Krishna encounters appear consistently among experiencers with even glancing familiarity with Vedantic imagery: a blue-skinned, flute-playing youth of surpassing beauty; the sudden vision of the vishvarupa opening across the entire visionary field; or a felt Presence that identifies itself, without words, as the beloved of every soul.
