Sophia

Sophia (from the Ancient Greek σοφία, 'wisdom') is the personification of divine wisdom in Hellenistic-Jewish, early Christian, and — most extensively — Gnostic thought. In the Wisdom books of the Hebrew Bible (Proverbs, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach), Wisdom is described as an emanation from God who was 'with him in the beginning,' a co-creator of the cosmos, and one who 'delights in the human race.' Christianity carried the imagery forward: the great Byzantine cathedral of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople was dedicated to Wisdom in this personified sense.

Gnostic cosmology elaborated Sophia into a full cosmological drama. In Valentinian and related Gnostic systems, Sophia is one of the aeons — the divine emanations that populate the Pleroma, the fullness of the ineffable God. Her attempt to know the unknowable Father directly precipitates the emergence of the material world as a kind of divine error or exile: matter itself, in some Gnostic readings, is Sophia's tears or her fallen shadow, longing to return to the wholeness from which it came. Human souls, in this schema, are fragments of the fallen Sophia awaiting reintegration — a myth of profound psychological and phenomenological resonance.

In contemporary visionary and psychedelic experience, Sophia is one of the most-cited archetypes in the psychonaut and visionary-art communities. Alex Grey's celebrated painting Sophia is one of the most iconic renderings of the modern encounter: a radiant female presence composed of nested geometric light, seen and felt as the source and telos of understanding itself. Experiencers commonly describe encounters with what they specifically identify as Sophia as feeling wiser and more compassionate than any human intelligence — the personification of the specifically luminous quality of knowing that mystical traditions have always tried to describe.
