The Virgin Mary

Mary of Nazareth — called Miriam in Hebrew and Aramaic — is the mother of Jesus Christ in Christian belief and one of the most widely venerated figures in world religion. Christian orthodoxy holds her to be the Theotokos, the 'God-bearer,' who conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit while remaining a virgin. Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and much of Anglicanism accord her a special role as the pre-eminent intercessor between humanity and the divine; Islam honours her as the mother of the prophet Isa (Jesus) and mentions her more times in the Qur'an than she is named in the New Testament.

Mary occupies the phenomenological slot of the Divine Mother in Christianity — the same archetypal role occupied by Isis in ancient Egypt, Cybele in Anatolia, Guanyin in Chinese Buddhism, Kali or Durga in Hinduism, and the great Earth Mother figures of Proto-Indo-European tradition. Marian devotion, particularly in the Catholic and Orthodox worlds, has produced a rich phenomenology of visitations: Marian apparitions at Lourdes (1858), Fátima (1917), Guadalupe (1531), and hundreds of less well-known sites report a consistent visual and emotional signature — a radiant, tender female presence, often robed in blue or white, whose regard carries the specific quality of universal maternal love.

Marian encounters appear widely in modern psychedelic reports, particularly on ayahuasca and psilocybin — often to experiencers of Catholic background but by no means exclusively. The phenomenology overlaps substantially with the more general 'Divine Mother' or 'Great Mother' archetype in visionary experience, differing chiefly in the specifically Christian visual signature (mantle, halo, sometimes a moon at her feet as in the Woman of the Apocalypse imagery of Revelation 12).
