The Ground of Being

The Void

The Void, considered as a realm rather than as a state, is arguably the most minimalist location in the hyperspatial cartography — 'a state, or place of nothingness, without time, matter or significance,' as the DMT-Nexus Hyperspace Lexicon describes it. It is the destination that consists in the absence of destinations, and the fact that anything can be reported about it at all is one of the more philosophically interesting features of psychonaut phenomenology.

Unlike other hyperspatial places — the Waiting Room, the Folding Rooms, Candyland — the Void has no architecture, no inhabitants, no visual detail, no temporal flow. Travellers who report arriving there describe the sudden absence of every reference point they were oriented by moments earlier: no body, no room, no distinction between here and elsewhere, no felt duration. Yet the observer remains, in some minimal sense, present — and the question that immediately arises is whether the observer is genuinely inside a place, or whether the place is the observer stripped of every accessory.

The first entry into the Void is commonly reported as frightening. Without familiar landmarks the mind reads the state as loss — of location, of relationship, of self — and can spend some of its time there in something close to panic. The lexicon writes gently about this: 'may elicit fear and a sense of being lost or alone.' Repeat visits, however, tend to yield a very different report. Experiencers who return with fewer defences describe finding 'great peace' in the stillness and vastness, and 'something of great beauty' in the featurelessness itself. Sitting in the Void, rather than trying to escape it, is often reported as the specific practice that changes the register from terror to spaciousness.

One of the lexicon's more original observations is that the Void does not stay empty. 'Nothingness has no preference or reference,' one contributor notes, but 'this nothingness becomes something at some point. It forgets itself and finds preference. It creates experience.' The Void, in this reading, is not the opposite of the manifest cosmos but its resting state — the ground condition from which experience arises when nothingness gets bored with itself. If that intuition is right, every other place in the codex is a temporary elaboration of this one.

Related realms: Ego Death (the phenomenological state that most reliably deposits the traveller here), the Central Light (its inversion), and the End of the Line (the deepest of DMT-Nexus's 'deepest points' vocabulary).
