Waiting Room
The Waiting Room is one of the most distinctive locations in the hyperspatial cartography — a specific hyperspace realm, distinct from Terence McKenna's more general 'Hyperspace Waiting Room,' that is described in the DMT-Nexus Hyperspace Lexicon as 'a holographic virtual landscape encountered during a breakthrough. Analogous to a games lobby, a place outside of the game. Populated with telepathic entities (ushers). It's a destination and departure point for recently deceased people arriving through portals.'
The games-lobby analogy is precise. The Waiting Room is not itself part of the deeper hyperspatial adventure — no journey takes place inside it. Its function is to be the place one arrives at first, gets oriented in, and is dispatched from. Its inhabitants (the ushers) are telepathic beings whose evident job is to greet the visitor, help them settle, and direct them onward through the appropriate portal to whatever realm they are meant to visit next.
The more striking claim in the lexicon description — repeated frequently enough in psychonaut reports to be worth listing — is that the Waiting Room is 'a destination and departure point for recently deceased people arriving through portals.' Experiencers commonly report the sense that they have arrived somewhere the newly dead also arrive, and that the same ushers who greet them will greet those visitors too, dispatching each toward wherever they are meant to go. Whether this is a metaphysical claim about post-mortem geography, an artefact of the mind's tendency to arrange visionary content into familiar frames, or (as many experiencers themselves prefer to leave it) a deliberately unresolved question, is one of the durably open matters the codex is designed to hold.
The wider cultural motif is old. Similar transit-realms appear as the Bardo of Tibetan Buddhism, the Ferry of the Styx in Greek mythology, the barzakh of Islamic eschatology, the Christian Purgatory, and the Egyptian Hall of Ma'at — all describing a between-space one crosses on the way from one condition to another. The DMT-Nexus Waiting Room shares the same functional slot, presented in a distinctively modern idiom (the airport lounge, the game lobby, the hotel foyer) rather than the mythological one.
